Clearing Clutter One Habit at a Time

logo

Dear Kathie,
Happy Thanksgiving! Fall is the time for gathering energy, introspection, moving inward. What better season to begin new habits and get a jump on those 'intentions' (otherwise known as resolutions) for the New Year. In the next several issues you'll get to practice Seedroff's Six Habits for De-Cluttering Success. By next summer you'll be less cluttered and ready to enjoy more time, energy, health, and money. Stick with me and we'll celebrate in June!

First of Six Habits for De-Cluttering Success
Habit One: Home and Function
little houe Lorri Molinari, certified life coach, tells us that a habit is “an automatic response or reaction to a specific stimulus or input. Once you experience the input, you do the habit without thinking.” So let's start de-cluttering by changing just one habit. Too often we set ourselves up for failure by changing too many behaviors at once. So start with just one behavior change that will soon become a habit – something you do without thinking.

You can eliminate some of the chaos in your life by creating a HOME for things and making sure it's always living there. And if it doesn't have a FUNCTION recycle, donate, or toss. This month, choose one habit you'd like to change on the road to clutter clearing.

  • Put one thing back in its HOME every time you use it: keys, measuring tape, scissors, your clothes/coat/shoes
  • Start a recycle paper bag for newspapers/magazines and then recycle the whole bag once a week.
  • Choose a mug or glass for pens and pencils, let go of the rest. Keep them in their new HOME or the desk drawer when not in use.
  • Clear off your desk at the end of every day. File papers, stack reading materials, organize phone calls for tomorrow.
  • Fill one black trash bag each week with items you will donate. Call for pick up or deliver to charity of choice weekly.
  • Manage your media: books, CDs, DVDs, tapes. Review and purge (recycle, donate). Make room for new interests, ideas, information.
  • Be mindful of what you are purchasing and bringing into your home/office. Do you really need it?

Feng Shui Delay
Environment Aligns with True Goals and Desires
clutter Recently a client called me into his office for a follow- up Feng Shui consult. He had moved nearly a year ago from one office to a much larger one. After a year, boxes of framed art, certificates, and photographs still sat on the floor unhung. “Is this bad Feng Shui? What do you tell your clients who don't follow your recommendations?” he asked. “Why haven't you hung things on the walls?” I questioned. “Because the walls' special finish prohibits nails and screws,” he explained, “and I've been trying to figure out how to hang things without marring the walls.”

My initial response reminded him that in the old space he couldn't decide if he wanted to grow his busines or retire. Wasn't it interesting that he hadn't had time to implement my recommendations in the old space before he moved into the new, larger space? And now, he disclosed, because of personal circumstances arising in the past year, he had actually decided to retire.

In Feng Shui I help people create a space that supports their goals and desires. In Feng Shui everything is connected – we create our environment and then our environment creates us. As we talked, I pointed out how the new space didn't allow him to actually 'move in'. The new space did not create a place of permanence. While his head said take advantage of the larger space and grow the business, it came with limitations, thus aligning with his heart – not settling in so he could retire. I encouraged him to take the boxes home and create space for the next step in his future.
