| Clearing Clutter Mandatory While Organizing |
 |
|
There's no better time to clear clutter than when
you're organizing. Why organize things you don't love
or use? Why buy extra tubs, files, and supplies for
items that are no longer needed? Get clear on what
results you want...more time to do what you want to
do, less stress, and easy access to the things you
need and use.
As you organize
- Discard--recycle all paper and magazines and
say "good bye" to items that are missing parts and
don't work, are torn or stained
- Donate--items you are no longer using, books,
furniture, clothing
- Deliver to their original owners all items that don't
belong in your space -- library books, movies and
tapes, borrowed items
- Let go!
Ask yourself the following questions to clear the
clutter as you organize.
- How much is enough? Ask yourself if you will ever
in your lifetime use all the paper, spices, hobby
supplies you have accumulated.
- How do I want to spend my time and energy? If
the frame needs glass and stain, will you ever get
around to it or would it better to donate it and buy a
finished frame?
- How long do I want to punish myself for spending
money on something I don't use or love? Let it go
and move on. Donate and take the tax credits. Give
to someone who will love and enjoy it.
- How do I want to use this space? Set clear
intentions on your end result -- sewing room, reading
room, hobby room -- and set your sights to reach
that goal by clearing clutter and making room for new
energy.
- How often will I refer to this information? If you
can retrieve the information from another source,
why spend time copying and filing the information.
Once you pare down and let go of things you no
longer love or use, organize in such a way that you
can easily access the contents when you need
them. Use stacking bins, lazy susans, binders, tubs,
and racks that are clearly labeled.
Remember to limit and tame your items. Determine
the size of box, tub, binder, number of drawers that
will house your items and then make a contract with
yourself not to exceed that space. Avoid buying
additional storage bins or larger binders. Instead
review and purge on a regular basis.
When you have a HOME for everything and
everything is in its HOME, you spend less time and
energy looking for what you need when you need it.
When you have fewer papers, clothes, supplies,
tools, you spend less money and time storing and
organzing.
Keep asking yourself how you want to spend your
time. And remember the words of Ivern Ball who
said, "That which you cannot give away you can
not possess. It possesses you."

Clear the Clutter and Get Organized! |
|
|
|
Closets. First get rid of anything in
your closet that does not make you look fabulous,
doesn't fit, and that you haven't used (handbags) or
worn in the past season. Let go of all value
attachments: sentimental, emotional, and
monetary! Then organize with the following:
- Clear Hat Boxes for baseball caps, handbags,
scarves, belts
- Clear Plastic Drawer Systems for sweaters, shirts,
shoes, lingerie, sox, accessories
- Elfa Closet Organizing Systems with rods,
shelving, drawers (free planning at Container Stores)
Drawers. Review and Purge! Keep
only essential items that you use regularly in
your "junk" drawer. Measuring tape, a few nails and
screws, rubber bands, jewelry, what else? Throw out
the broken parts that never got repaired, odds and
ends. Ensure quick access with:
- Expand-a-Drawer Organizers that adjust to the
width of your drawer for instant custom fit for all
sizes of objects
- Acrylic Drawer Organizers -- stackable, modular
systems allows you to customize a storage plan in
any drawer
- Valet Organizers that fel like leather and create a
protective environment for jewelry, wallet,
accessories
Garages and Basements. Why let
them become the burial grounds for everything you
don't know what else to do with? Out of sight --
out of mind? No time like the present to get rid of
the sporting equipment that has long outlived its
usefulness, books, furniture, and all the
stuff you're storing for someone else? Use organizers
so you can see what you have...
- Elfa Garage Wall Shelving with adjustable wire
shelves for tools, cans, boxes, ladders
- Heavy Metal Stacking Bins for tools, manuals,
garden seeds & supplies, tape, electrical supplies
- Square Storage Boxes with lids for camping gear,
sports equipment, tire chains, plumbing supplies,
bungie cords
Finally, make sure you have several Folding
Crates available to fill and shuffle or deliver
to their original owners: library books, Aunt Martha's
canning supplies, camping gear or picnic supplies,
groceries at Costco, toys, recyleable paper and
magazines, and more. When not in use, they fold flat
for easy storage.
