  • DeCluttering in the New Year!

This is the time when most of us are doing our darndest to implement those New Year Resolutions. Make clearing clutter in 2005 an intention rather than a resolution. Why?

Resolutions are a "formal statement of resolve, firmness, determination." An intention is "acting in a certain way, purpose, aim, objective, goal." Resolutions are so strict and confining. Intentions encourage purpose and changing our actions to get what we want. Consider the following "intentions" to help you de-clutter in 2005.

    1. I intend to de-clutter by letting go and recycling things in my space. Clutter is more than a disorganized closet or messy garage. Clutter is the result of too much stuff in too small a space. No matter how much you fill tubs and file cabinets with neatly oganized papers and things, you undoubtedly have more than you will ever need or use. This year, consider letting go of the magazines and newspapers that are more than 6 months old and books and journals you haven't referred to in the past 18 months. At the least, tear out articles that you can use this year and recycle the remainder. Remember that a new magazine, journal, newspaper is coming soon with NEW ideas. Step out of the past and into a new future. Look for "retro" ideas on-line instead of filling your space with old articles that appealed to the trends of the '80s, 90s (or earlier?).

    2. I intend to de-clutter by donating re-useable items instead of saving them for a garage sale. Consider the amount of time, energy, and space required to organize a garage sale. Then estimate realistic profits and decide if it's "worth it." In my personal experience and working with clients, we have found that all the energy of dragging stuff out, organizing it, pricing it, and then "haggling" is sheer clutter--mind, body, and soul! Did you know you can donate your items and claim IRS deductions at fair market value? For example, ARC suggests $.75 to $5 for t-shirts. What can you get at a garage sale? $.25 - $1?? And chairs? How about $12-30 instead of $1-5 Or shoes/boots $.75-$30 instead of $.50- $3 Call ARC at 1-800-283-2721 for a pickup. Most times they will pickup within a day. Free up the time you would spend on a garage sale to go away for the weekend or enjoy your favorite hobby.

    3. I intend to de-clutter through personal introspection. In every client with whom I've had the honor to work, we have uncovered a "hole" that's trying to be filled with stuff. What is the hole you are trying to fill? The hole is usually related to either fear or loss resulting in depression or insecurity. Have you lost your marriage? your career? a loved one? Do you fear being alone? running out of food or supplies? not having or being enough? Take a look at why letting go is difficult? And then ask yourself how keeping 20 year's worth of magazines or buying more is benefiting you.

As my mentor and teacher Denise Linn says, "where intention goes, energy flows." Set strong intentions for change in 2005, act differently, aim high, and create new energy for you and your space!

    New Name, Same Aim

When I started my business in 2001 as AllWays SimplyWell, I chose a business name that described my desire to promote a sense of healthy well-being through simplicity. While these principles remain an integral part of my business, I've listened to myself and responded to valuable client requests and adjusted the direction of my business.

An exciting, providential name change -- Simplified Interiors -- now more aptly describes the results I want for my clients. Through classes, consultations, and coaching, I will help you clear your clutter at home, in your office and in yourself.

If you're looking for more energy, more time, more opportunities in 2005 -- Simplified Interiors is your answer. You can reach me at Kathie@SimplifiedInteriors.com.

    Dear Mrs. Ch'i

When you clear clutter from your environment, you send an open-armed invitation to Mrs. Ch'i. And why is this important? Think of Mrs. Ch'i as your very favorite aunt. She is the person you love to have visit because she is so wise, interesting, and fun to have around you never want her to leave. She brings balance, harmony, and joy to your space.

Mrs. Ch'i also knows everything about feng shui and clutter clearing and can help you design an environment to support all your dreams and desires. Ask your question and the answer will be published in the next issue of SIMPLIFIED INTERIORS.
