Calling all Dumpsters
for Simplified Interiors
Dear Kathie,
How are you progressing with your de-clutter habits?
Did you challenge yourself to let go of two like items
for every favorite you kept (#4 One In, Two Out)?
Hopefully Habits 1 through 3 are routine behaviors by
now (#1 Homes for everything. #2 Simplify! Less is
More and #3 Now and Never). This month your Habit
#5 focus is DAILY DILIGENCE. Take every
opportunity to dump, donate, and deliver 24/7. When
you adopt clutter clearing principles, letting go
becomes a regular habit because you've got an end
result clearly in mind. What will you do differently this
summer when you're not hassling with stuff you don't
use or need?
DAILY DILIGENCE
Dump, Donate, and Deliver 24/7
Every day be on the look out for any thing broken or
every thing you no longer use or need. Let them go
immediately. Postponed decisions cause clutter,
which require more time and energy, again and again
and again. Get in the habit of DAILY DILIGENCE.
When you're
reviewing a file or file drawer
and see information you no longer need or is
outdated, dump it in the recycle bucket. While getting
dressed, if you come across clothes that no longer fit
or don't look so great on you any more, donate them
to your favorite charity. Next time you find the CDs
and books you borrowed from your sister, put them in
your car to take to her, or in a box to mail to her, now.
Avoid lengthy de-clutter sessions by practicing DAILY
DILIGENCE.
Action Steps: Maintain three bags or
boxes at all times: one for donating, one for delivering
that you take to and from your car, and a trash bag for
dumping (this includes a recycle bucket/basket and a
shredder if you use one). DAILY DILIGENCE means
regularly letting go of any thing and every thing you no
longer use or need. By maintaining your bags and
boxes for dumping, donating and delivering, you have
created a HOME and a system for successfully
managing this habit.
Clearing Clutter the Feng Shui Way
It's all about the energy
It's all about energy. Not only the energy that makes
our Universe function, but the physical, mental,
spiritual, and emotional energy it takes for us as
individuals to function. When we have too much stuff
to deal with it can take a toll on how effectively we
function on a day to day basis. You've probably heard
me quote Karen Kingston who says, "we are
energetically attached to our clutter." And Denise
Linn says, "When you shift the energy in your
environment, it can have a mystical effect on your
life."
Feng Shui encourages balance and harmony in your
environment so Ch'i energy can flow more freely, thus
creating an environment that supports your goals and
desires. Clearing clutter is always a pre-requisite to
good Feng Shui. Making room for positive Ch'i
requires a commitment to letting go of any thing that
is blocking or minimizing energy flow. Like a long 'to
do' list that you successfully complete one by one,
you can get that same feeling of personal energy and
achievement by tackling and completing mental,
emotional, spiritual and physical clutter. Your reward
is a balanced and harmonious environment with
enough open space for new opportunities and Ch'i.
At a coaching class I took in 2000, I was introduced to
Thomas J. Leonard and Coach University who
developed CLEAN SWEEP (trademarked). The
instructions for
this exercise said, "You have more natural energy
when you are complete with your environment, well-
being, money, and relationships. The Clean
Sweep Program (trademarked) consists of 100
items, which,
when completed, give you the vitality and strength you
want."
Action Step: Make a list of things
undone. List every single thing you have been
avoiding,
putting off, ignoring, delaying, or procrastinating.
Begin to take action on these items one at a time until
they're done. Some may require several steps.
Some may be checked off simply by dumping them
(that broken chair that you've finally decided you don't
really need after all this time). Celebrate your
accomplishments. Keep your space open for
positive
energy flow and amazing new opportunities.

"In a sense, holding on to a physical memory is a
child's way of seeing the world -- children don't have
confidence in their memories the way that adults do.
Keeping the memory and letting go of the object is a
process of growth." --Nancy Dougherty,
Psychoanalyst, Institute of Chicago
